This is a list of number-one dance hits as recorded by Billboard magazine's Hot Dance Club Play chart — a weekly national survey of popular songs in U.S. dance clubs. It began on October 26, 1974 under the title Disco Action chart. It is compiled by Billboard exclusively from playlists submitted by nightclub disc jockeys, who must apply and meet certain criteria to become "Billboard-reporting DJs".
Below are links to lists showing the songs that have topped the chart. Dates shown represent "week-ending" Billboard issue dates.
Billboard has adopted former publication rival Record World's chart statistics from the weeks between March 29, 1975, and August 21, 1976, into their Hot Dance Club Play chart history, as Billboard did not publish a national chart during this time (Billboard published multiple charts featuring regional- or city-specific hits during this era).
From the chart's inception until the week of February 16, 1991, several (or even all) songs on an EP or album could occupy the same position if more than one track from a release was receiving significant play in clubs. Beginning with the February 23, 1991, issue, Hot Dance Club Play became "song specific", meaning that only one song could occupy each position at a time.
This is a list of the U.S. Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs number-one songs in 2009. The first number-one song of the year was claimed by American pop girl group The Pussycat Dolls with their song "I Hate This Part", which spent two consecutive weeks atop the chart.[1][2] Multiple artists made one chart appearance, including The Killers with "Human",[3]Donna Summer with "Fame (The Game)",[4] LeAnn Rimes with "What I Cannot Change",[5] Shontelle with "T-Shirt",[6] and Lily Allen with "The Fear".[7] American singer Mariah Carey garnered her fourteenth and fifteenth number-ones on the chart with "I Stay in Love" from her eleventh studio album E=MC² (2008) and with "Obsessed" from her twelfth studio album Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel (2009), respectively.[8][9][10]
French DJ David Guetta also topped the chart two times with "Sexy Bitch", a collaboration with Akon,[11] and with "When Love Takes Over", a collaboration with Kelly Rowland; "When Love Takes Over spent two consecutive weeks atop the chart,[12][13] and ranked at number one on the 2009 Hot Dance Club Songs year end chart.[14] The Pussycat Dolls and Kristine W both achieved three number one singles on the chart. In addition to "I Hate This Part", which peaked at number one for two consecutive weeks, The Pussycat Dolls also topped the chart with "Bottle Pop", a collaboration with Snoop Dogg,[15] and "Hush Hush", featuring Nicole Scherzinger.[16] Kristine W topped the chart with "Never",[17]"Love Is the Look",[18] and "Be Alright".[19] Beyoncé and Lady Gaga were the only artists to achieve at least four number one songs on the chart. The former topped the chart with "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)",[20] "Diva",[21] "Halo",[22] and "Sweet Dreams".[23] The latter topped the chart with the songs "Poker Face",[24] "LoveGame",[25] "Paparazzi",[26]and "Bad Romance".[27]"The Fear" is a song by British recording artist Lily Allen from her second studio album, It's Not Me, It's You (2009). Written by Allen and Greg Kurstin, the song was released as the lead single of the album. Initially, "Everyone's at It" was announced to be the first single from the album. However, it was ultimately decided on "The Fear" to be released on 26 January 2009 by Regal Recordings, while the demo (which was then titled "I Don't Know") leaked onto the Internet in April 2008. The song incorporates electropop music as the lyrics articulate problems with celebrity lifestyles and include metaphors for recognised tabloid national newspapers such asThe Sun. "The Fear" also references, albeit indirectly, the Great Depression of the 1930s.
Contemporary critics complimented the song and its themes of consumerism and the supposed postmodern condition, although some called it a cliché and an understatement for Allen's past media controversies. "The Fear" peaked at number one on the UK Singles Chart, where it remained for four weeks. The single peaked also inside the top 20 of the charts of some European countries and Australia. It is also Allen's second chart entry in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
The accompanying music video portrayed a fantasy theme, with Allen dancing with giant wrapped gifts and balloons. It was shot atWrest Park in Bedfordshire and also featured dancers dressed as butlers; the locations were initially in a caravan in a park, and then in a giant colourful mansion, surrounded by contrasting grey clouds. The song was performed live for the first time via The Scott Mills Show on BBC Radio 1 and during Allen's 2009 concert tour. "The Fear" was awarded with Best Track prize at the 2009 Q Awards,[1]and also won Allen two Ivor Novello Awards in 2010, for best song musically and lyrically, and most performed work.[2]
